About Pentane

Pentane (C₅H₁₂) is among the most volatile of the liquid alkanes, with a boiling point close to room temperature. Superior Chemical Co. supplies both structural isomers: n-pentane, a straight five-carbon chain, and isopentane (2-methylbutane), a branched isomer with an even lower boiling point.

Because of its high volatility and clean combustion, pentane is widely used as a physical blowing agent in foam manufacturing and as a low-boiling extraction solvent. Due to its extremely low flash point, it is shipped exclusively in tanker and railcar volumes.

Common industrial uses

  • Blowing agent for polystyrene and polyurethane foam
  • Low-temperature extraction solvent
  • Calibration and reference standard
  • Aerosol propellant blending
  • Specialty fuel and combustion applications

Frequently asked
What's the difference between pentane and isopentane?
Both share the formula C₅H₁₂, but n-pentane is a straight chain while isopentane (2-methylbutane) is branched. The branching gives isopentane a lower boiling point (about 28 °C vs. 36 °C for n-pentane), which matters for blowing-agent and formulation applications sensitive to volatility.
Why is pentane only available in tanker and railcar volumes?
Pentane's extremely low flash point makes small-container handling and shipping impractical at scale for most industrial buyers, so Superior Chemical Co. supplies it in 8,000-gallon tanker and 28,500-gallon railcar volumes.
Is pentane used in extraction?
Yes — its low boiling point allows for gentle, low-temperature solvent recovery, which is valuable in some extraction workflows, though it requires strict flammability controls.
